Methamphetamine hydrochloride, popularly known as shabu, worth P600,000 was confiscated during a seaport interdiction operation conducted by joint elements of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).

PDEA Director General Isidro S Lapeña said that the illegal drug was seized from suspect identified as Jan Erik Montejo Habunal, 29 years old, a resident of Camp Evangelista, Patag, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

Habunal was arrested on February 20, 2017 at around 7:55 in the evening by combined operatives of PDEA Regional Office 10 (PDEA RO10) and its K9 unit under Director Adrian Alvariño after frisking of passengers off Terminal Facility 1, Philippine Maritime Office-Misamis Oriental Cagayan de Oro (PMO-MOC) Port, Macabalan, Cagayan de Oro City.

Seized from Habunal were six transparent plastic sachets containing shabu, weighing more or less 100 grams, with an estimated market value of P600,000.

Habunal will be facing charges for violation of Section 5 (Attempt to Transport Dangerous Drugs) and Section 11 (Possession of Dangerous Drugs), Article II of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

“Beside airport and parcel interdiction, we need to replicate our enforcement efforts in protecting our seaports from becoming transit and dropping points for large volumes of illegal drugs,” Lapeña said, citing that the operation will be regularly conducted to seal off our waters from drug trafficking.
